As Spring begins, so does the season for state mandated testing for students.
The first of these tests, the CAHSEE, will be administered to students in grade 10 on Tuesday, March 11 and Wednesday, March 12, 2008. The CAHSEE is the California High School Exit Exam. The tests are in the subject areas of Math and English and students must pass these tests as part of their graduation requirement. Should a student miss the test(s) or fail one or both parts of the tests, they are given ample opportunity to pass it. Our Tutorial Center offers assistance to any student needing additional help.
STAR Testing will take place April 15-16 and April 22 -23, 2008. Students in grades 9-11 will be taking these tests and we ask that parents support their student and the school by encouraging your student to give their best efforts to these vital tests.
Parents who have a student in the 11th grade should also be aware that there is a section of the test called the EAP or Early Assessment Placement. This section, if passed, will exempt a student from taking the college English and Math Placement exams. It will also address college readiness and provide appropriate learning opportunities for the student if needed, during their senior year. This augmented portion of the test includes 15 multiple choice questions in both Math and English plus an essay. This portion of the test is optional but highly recommended. Results of this part of the test combined with the results of the California Standards Test, provide juniors and their parents with early signals regarding their readiness for the rigor of college English and Math courses. We ask parents of juniors to talk with their student about the opportunity and encourage them to take this short, additional portion of the test (even if they are not certain about applying to a UC or CSU campus.)
Spring also brings two wonderful fundraising events to the spotlight. On Sunday, April 6, 2008, the Educational Foundation will be hosting “Appetite for Education” a wonderful evening to be held at the French Garden restaurant. In addition, in May, the Booster Club will host its annual Golf Tournament and dinner. This is a great event and fun to attend even if you are not a golfer! For more information on both of these wonderful events, please check our website and newsletters.
Finally, our Analy High School Centennial celebration will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2008. Please don’t forget to mark your calendar for this memorable event!
Yours in Education,
Martin M. Webb, Principal
Fourteen Analy debaters dominated at the 2-day December tournament at Diablo Valley College. Closing out parliamentary debate were the teams of Kyla Coulter, Autumn Burnes, Harrison Noah, Michael Millerick, Riley Daly, Josh Maas-Howard, and Chris Catterton and Sam Stafford. As if winning more debates than any other school at the tournament wasn’t enough, Analy speakers also took home top awards—among them Sam Stafford who took home best speaker in the entire tournament.
Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s words and actions were echoed by several outstanding student speakers from Analy High School at the annual Martin Luther King Oratorical Contest sponsored by the Community Baptist Church in Santa Rosa. The school finalists from Analy included (in the junior division): Gordon Allen, Gustavo Vasquez, and Gabe Wheaton; ( in the senior division): Leah Erickson, Nick Doughty, Paul Calley, and Rabia Jaffe. Rabia and Gabe went on to represent Analy at the final contest, with Gabe Wheaton taking third place.
Twenty-two speakers from Analy High School strode to the stage at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational speech tournament at James Logan High School in Union City. Speaking past hundreds of competitors from 60 schools around the state, Analy emerged victorious as the first place debate team (yes, WE beat Bellermine!). The debaters making this tremendous feat possible in final rounds were: Mica Burnes, Autumn Burnes, Mariah Noah, and Chris Catterton and Sam Stafford who took their undefeated record all the way to the final round. Congratulations to all who worked hard (including the dedicated drivers and judges) to make this historical victory possible.
Michael Barela advanced to the state level with his Veterans of Foreign Wars speech addressing “My role in honoring American Veterans.” After 3 days in Sacramento, including a chance to sit in the governor’s chair, Mike Barela returned to Sebastopol hundreds of dollars richer and several ideas richer—determined to enter the contest again next year, Mike has already begun composing his speech on next year’s topic.
Spring is a crucial time for communication with the many qualifying tournaments and invitationals. Students are reminded to attend the weekly Tuesday meetings at lunch in room 210. Parents are reminded that a new semester has begun, and that they can opt to pay spring semester dues ($100) or pay $25 per tournament, whichever is easiest and most cost-effective for your debater. If parents are currently not receiving e-mail reminders from Lynette Williamson, please e-mail her at db8coach@hotmail.com.
Attention All Students
As we begin the second semester, we are planning
for our “In House Registration”. We will be coming to your social studies classes during the week of March 3 – 7 to complete course requests for next year! Can’t believe it’s here already! As you recall, it’s a 2-day process where the first day we review your graduation status and then present the course request sheets to select 7 classes and 2 alternates for the following year. These sheets are to be signed by parents and the next day we “bubble” the scantron forms. As a reminder, this is the beginning and it’s
possible to change your mind or talk with your counselor.
As always, with the start of the new semester and New Year, there’s always a new commitment to improve in areas. We encourage you to take advantage of tutorial and if you need further assistance, be sure to see Louise in the Tutorial Center, which is in the library.
Seniors: Thank you to everyone who attended the FAFSA workshop earlier this month with Margaret Mann. It was very valuable. If you couldn’t attend, we have forms in the Counseling Office and the Career Center. Margaret is also doing 2 FAFSA workshops on Sat., Feb. 9, 2008 and Feb. 23, 2008 at SRJC. You can contact here at 524-1545 or email her atmmann@santarosa.edu. You can also contact your child’s counselor at Analy for more information.
You will be receiving your grad status reports shortly. Be sure to see your counselor if you need to attend either the after-school make up program for social studies or English. Or, if you have 3 credits or less to make up, you’ll be seeing Mr. Sherron for the Independent Study program to make up credits.
Very Important!!! Watch your attendance in classes. The Graduation Participation Policy requires students to be “on track” for earning full credit in required classes for graduation. Remermber…block days count as 2!!!
SRJC Information Night is Wed., March 19, 2008 at 7:00pm in the Analy Library. This is designed for seniors and their parents. Plan to attend as it’s very valuable for students planning to attend SRJC in the fall.
We will be going into Government/ Economics classes during the week of Jan. 28. We will be filling out the Doyle Scholarship and distributing release forms for the Cal Grant. We are hoping to file the Cal Grant GPA’s electronically by February 22 and need those release forms returned to send your GPA. You can return them to the Counseling Office.
Juniors: We are reviewing the PSAT results which also means we’re talking about SAT test dates. Typically we encourage juniors to take the May3, SAT I Reasoning test and for those students considering the University of California system, we encourage them to complete their 2 Subject Tests on Saturday, June 7. You can register online either through our counseling website or through College Board directly.
The Information Night for parents of juniors starting the College Search process if scheduled for
Thursday, March 20 @ 7:00 pm in the Analy Library. We recommend that all students and their parents embarking on this journey attend this meeting.
Sophomores: PSAT results are in and your counseling will be contacting you to explain and share your results. Feel free to contact your counselor about your results as well.
Your college admission gpa begins calculating during your sophomore year, so you now have the first semester “in the books!” As you recall, D’s in core classes are not acceptable for college admission. If you earned a “D” in a core class, summer school is the best way to address this omission.
Freshman: Congratulations on completing your first semester in high school. We hope you’re confident and comfortable at Analy. If you have questions or concerns, please contact your counselor. We’re looking forward to a great spring semester.
Good luck to everyone!

In addition, a list of websites that are helpful with aspects of the search for financial aid is available in the Career Center. A number of financial aid resource books are on College & Career Center shelves.
Grade Career Research Unit This semester sophomores will be spending a week in their World History classes exploring careers. Students will complete several self-assessments, explore careers of interest, complete basic resumes and look at the fundamentals of an interview. The week is an opportunity to see what resources are available and to take a bit of time to think about what might come after Analy.
Student JobsWest County student jobs are posted in the College & Career Center. Currently there are quite a few job opportunities for students. In addition to the job board in the Career Center, students can access the Santa Rosa Junior College job listings for students at: www.santarosa.edu

The California Scholarship Federation is a state-wide organization that honors high school students for outstanding academic achievement. According to its by-laws:
Membership is neither automatic nor compulsory. THE STUDENT MUST APPLY FOR MEMBERSHIP DURING AN ESTABLISHED ENROLLMENT PERIOD.
Enrollment is held early in each semester. Students bring their prior semester’s grades to room 204 during announced time periods. Officers check the students’ eligibility and, if they qualify, they pay $4.00 dues and are enrolled for membership for the prior semester. Graduating seniors will submit “worse case scenario” grades two weeks prior to graduation.
Students qualify for membership based on grades earned in three categories of CSF approved classes that include core classes in English, Math, Science, some elective CSF membership is a mark of distinction, noted by colleges and universities. Members may better qualify for scholarship consideration at graduation and, later, in college. The Analy CSF chapter offers a scholarship for graduating CSF members who have gone above and beyond CSF academic requirements. This scholarship recognizes members who have demonstrated outstanding service to the local community. Applicants must be lifetime members, qualifying for membership for six semesters, including one in the senior year.
State Charter by-laws prohibit CSF Chapters from accepting membership enrollment outside the established enrollment period.
Dues are $4.00 which go directly to the Analy Chapter’s scholarship and graduation awards fund.
Do you know that during a typical week Analy High School students and their parents drive almost 23,000 miles to get to and from campus! At an average of 20 miles per gallon, that amounts to over 1000 gallons of gasoline each week! And those gallons convert to over 5 tons of greenhouse gases! Just for Analy students in one week! Whether you agree with Al Gore being awarded the Nobel Prize or not, it hard not to be shocked by the facts about our daily commute to school.
This year, the Statistics at Analy will once again work on reducing the impact of our commute during the months of April and May. The class keeps track of students who carpool, walk, ride their bike, or take the bus during this time period, and hands out prizes to those who do. The prizes are gift certificated from local businesses. At the end of the campaign, all participants will be eligible for a large raffle prize.
If you own a local business, or work with someone who does, we need your help. The more prizes available, the more our students will carpool, or take alternate forms of transportation to get to school. Please ask these businesses to participate by offering to donate a gift certificate for an item in their store: bagels, cookies, ice cream, bike repair, free lunch, etc. And if you are interested in helping with this important project in any other way, please contact David Casey at dcasey@analy.org or at 824-2300 x2006.
The theme has been chosen……the decorations ordered…..the entertainment reserved. Planning is well underway for the 2008 graduation party!
Project Graduation is the all night, drug and alcohol free graduation party which over 95% of graduates attend each year. It is comprised 100% of parent volunteers who start the planning process well before the school year even begins. We are still in need of someone who can chair the fundraising position.
Thank you for all of you who have signed up to volunteer for the big bash.Volunteers are still needed the evening of the big event. If you are parents of a Junior, Sophomore, or Freshman, this would be a great night to see what all the hoopla is all about. Please call Becky Raymond at 823-8001 to reserve your time.
Project Graduation tickets can be purchased for $50 in the counseling office. A ticket would make a great Valentines’ Day gift! Please see Nancy Seibert. The Senior packets will be going out in April. Please look for the permission slips which need to be signed by all who attend.
Remember…….Project Graduation starts NOW!!
The Booster Club is a parent group whose primary mission is to raise funds to support Analy High School. Funds are raised in support of athletics, as well as teacher/classroom grants for instructional improvement, site improvement projects, technology, vocational education, the visual and performing arts, and Project Graduation. The Analy Booster Club is one of the few booster groups in the area to divide its funds between athletics and academic programs.
Be part of the parent action at Analy High School so you can enjoy these years with your children. Join the Analy Booster Club and volunteer to help us reach our goals.
2008 BOOSTER CLUB ALLOCATIONS Over the past twelve years, the Analy Booster Club has contributed over $600,000 to the school. Funds are raised through events such as concession stand operations at athletic events, the annual membership drive, spirit apparel sales, the Apple Blossom Pancake Breakfast, the annual golf tournament, and eScrip contributions. Our next Booster Club Allocation will be finalized at our February 2008 Board meeting. This year we expect to contribute over $40,000 to a variety of Analy programs, thus bringing our total contributions to nearly $640,000 over the past thirteen years to Analy High School.

Contact Paul Olson @ 823-5430 to request forms by mail, to make a donation, or to volunteer. We hope to see you there.
eScript Fundraising just doesn’t get any easier than this…and it’s FREE! Here’s what to do:
In the mid-1990’s, the Sebastopol City Council created the Town Plaza out of what was a municipal parking lot. The Town Plaza has hosted hundreds of events since then, as well as serving as a place to relax, hangout with friends, or take a break from the rush of everyday life.
About one year ago, I noticed increased use of the Town Plaza by the youth of our community. As Chief of Police, I expected the inevitable telephone calls of concern. In prior years, local youth have selected various hangouts (Ives Park, North Main Street, and Safeway to name a few) and each selection resulted in complaints from area residents about littering, loitering, vandalism and drug use. I was pleasantly surprised when the police department received very few calls regarding the youth in the plaza. It seemed the youth were being well-tolerated by the downtown community.
Unfortunately, as time went on, the conduct of some youth in the plaza started drawing attention. The police department began to receive increased telephone calls reporting vandalism, drug use, and occasionally, fights. I noticed an increase in skateboarding activity. (Skateboarding is illegal in the Town Plaza and other areas downtown for the safety of other plaza users, and to prevent damage to property.)
In response to these calls, Sebastopol police officers repeatedly made contact with groups of youth in the plaza, asking them to police themselves, thereby preventing the need for us to take enforcement action. One of our Community Service Volunteers “adopted” the Town Plaza, talking to the youth and trying to lessen the behavior that causes complaints.
Initially, our efforts seemed to be working. The littering abated somewhat; the skateboarding activity was lessened. However, January 2008, the problems increased dramatically. Nearly every surface in the Town Plaza was covered with profane graffiti, including the four posts that frame the gazebo. Most of the public property and landscaping had been damaged or destroyed. The frequency of apparent drug use and fights increased. In addition, local adult methamphetamine users and dealers were observed intermingling with younger people, including middle school students.
As Chief of Police, I cannot standby while individuals deface and damage public property, use and sell drugs, and create a hostile environment for other Town Plaza users. Therefore, the Sebastopol Police Department has begun to increase our enforcement efforts in the Town Plaza. Warning for observed violations will now be the exception rather than the rule.
To members of the community, I commit that we will continue to conduct ourselves professionally, addressing criminal behavior with enforcement, while avoiding targeting any specific demographic. To the youth using the Town Plaza, you are more than welcome to continue to use the Town Plaza. It is yours as much as anyone’s. However, given the current criminal and dangerous behavior in the plaza, expect to see a greater police presence and greater enforcement efforts. Any efforts local youth can put forth on their own to eliminate the need for us to focus our efforts in the Town Plaza would be greatly appreciated.
Our 8th Student Video Festival will be held in the Analy auditorium on Saturday May 3 at 7pm. This year’s festival is funded by a generous grant from the Analy Education Foundation. THANKS SO MUCH ! Our event will showcase creative, dramatic, funny, active, insightful videos and more. It will cover the range of expression, different points of view and be terrific videos to watch. Our students have become very skilled at making short films using the same techniques as feature films, using the same software that professional filmmakers use and you get the benefit of their hard work. All you have to do is sit back, relax and watch great short films! Hope to see you there—it’s a wonderful evening.
I would like also like to thank the Analy Education Foundation for their other generous grant to upgrade our advanced editing software and for providing external drives so that we can store our large video files. THANKS!
Colin Brant, working with Sammy Vanek, won First prize in the Santa Rosa Red Cross Film Festival. Colin Brant was also Rotary’s ROP video vocational student of the year in December 2007. Colin was honored for his excellent work over the years particularly his project with Sammy “Breaking Free” the story of a young teenager coming of age and facing choices. He was honored for his storytelling skills and outstanding technical skills. Colin’s work has been featured in other festivals. Colin plans to major in video and film after high school.
Quinn Fuji’s work was also honored and featured in the same Red Cross festival. His documentary with Ren Cassity “Emanji Buddhist Temple” was well received. Quinn’s work is always a class favorite. He is an outstanding beginning student and his work will be featured in the festival.
The Sebastopol Chamber of Commerce named Advanced student Mark DeRutte “Youth volunteer of the Year” for his video work in the community. Mark was honored for his many hours spent creating videos that help connect the community to the high school as well as promote the business community by creating video projects. Mark was the lead director/editor on our football project for which he shot and edited highlight footage shown at home games during half time as well as opening videos introducing our team players on the big outdoor screen. The football project is a huge undertaking, filming both home and away games, editing with a quick turn around and finally setting up for the video playback about 2 hours before the game. He was also lead director on both videos for Sebastopol Rotary's music festivals: Cajun Festival and Country Music Festival, creating both a documentary for each festival as well as a short commercial designed to be shown on local TV. He is also working on our year long project with the Sebastopol Chamber of Commerce creating a series of short business profiles to be shown at their annual event as well as possibly on their website. He has also shown his entrepreneurial skills by beginning his own freelance business, buying his own HD video camera and full Mac editing system to begin his work as a freelance vide producer creating videos for weddings and other events. Mark plans to go on to major in video studies after high school. He also plans to continue his freelance business while attending either San Francisco State University or going to the Santa Rosa J.C.
Analy’s ROP video works were recently featured in it’s own screening session at the West County Film Festival. These students have won awards and recognition from other festivals for their quality work.
Our Advanced Video 3 class has been working on projects in the community: creating documentaries (Rotary’s Cajun Festival and Country Music Festival) business profiles (Sebastopol Chamber of Commerce), training videos (The Sebastopol Police Department) and various projects for Analy as well as working on their own feature projects.
We are full for this Spring 2008 semester, but if you have a project, please contact Ann Humphrey at ahumphrey@analy.org for consideration for Fall 2008 production schedule.
Tutoring
Free math tutoring can be arranged through the Tutorial Center. Have your student stop by the library and visit the Tutorial Center to find out how they can get help.
The math department has collected a list of students who will tutor for pay for nearly all math subjects. Have your student talk to his or her math teacher if you want to hire a student tutor. Santa Rosa JC has a list of tutors available for hire at http:// online.santarosa.edu/presentation/page/?23318.
Homework
The Analy math department has a common homework policy: A student needs to earn 66% or higher on homework or the highest overall grade they can earn in a math class is a
D. Homework provides practice, and practice is a big part of strengthening math skills. In addition, we often cover material in homework that we don't end up putting on a test or quiz. This policy is designed to motivate students to get into the habit of doing their homework and ultimately to do better on tests, quizzes, and their entire course. If you have questions about the policy, contact your student's math teacher
A new grading application we have site licensed here at Analy allows teachers to walk around a class and enter scores into a Palmbased grading program that syncs with their regular desktop grading program, greatly streamlining homework processing. If you have an old Palm that is laying around gathering dust that you'd be willing to donate to get someone else up and running, please contact Walt Hays at 824.2362 or whays@analy.org. The requirements are as follows: Palm OS 4.x or 5.x, 256+ colors, touch screen and stylus. The software, if you would like to read more about it is described at http://www.easygradepro.com/ feature_handhelds.html.
An informational night for parents interested in learning more about the Analy High School AP Program.
Our AP teachers will each have a short presentation and then you are welcome to visit with them individually and ask questions about their programs. Students currently involved in the AP Program will also be there to discuss a “student” point of view on the various programs.
This is a very informative night and we encourage anyone considering and AP Program to attend this meeting.
The meter continues to rise from Phone-athon gifts to the Foundation. Your donations have already surpassed last year’s first semester total! As of mid-January the receipts have reached nearly $22,000. Thank you for your generosity!
The next fundraiser is a brand new spring event: Appetite for Education at the French Garden—A Community Event for Analy High School. Tickets for the April 6th evening gala will soon be on sale. $100 per person will bring you a five-course gourmet dinner paired with local wines and entertainment in the elegant environment of Sebastopol’s own French Garden Restaurant & Brasserie. The Fundraising Committee is also cooking up some exciting live auction packages to bid on, along with a cornucopia of silent auction items.
So where will all this money go? Our Funding Committee is busy researching what to target for the next round of funds distribution by meeting with the School’s department heads. If you’d like to know more about how it works, come join us at one of our board meetings.
Our next two meetings are February 5th and March 4th in the Library at 6:30 p.m. You can also learn more at our web site: www.analyedfoundation.org or link through the school’s web site. Our message phone is 824-2333.

Analy High School ASB is holding its 8th Annual Charity Auction on Saturday, March 15 from 6-9:30pm at Sebastopol Community Church. Mark your calendars now and plan to attend the auction. There will be a Silent Auction from 6-8pm, dinner will be served from 6:30-7:30pm with live music for your entertainment, the Live Auction starts at 8pm and the Raffle will be at 9pm. Tickets for the event are $10 and are available at Analy High School and the door. All proceeds from this event will go to Bob Burke’s Kids foundation.
Bob Burke’s Kids is a non-profit program that provides year-round activities and support for Sonoma County Families with children diagnosed with terminal or chronic illnesses. The program puts on barbecues, fishing trips, skating parties, bowling, and holiday parties for local families – all free of charge. Bob Burke’s Kids does not have any salaried positions or paid employees, and for over twenty-seven years they have relied solely on donations for funding. Bob Burke’s program provides a support network for families and children, and a chance to take a break from the diseases that consume so much of their lives. This program has helped over 500 families, a number that continues to grow. The proceeds from the last seven charity auctions organized by the Analy Student Leadership class have gone to help keep this program going, and we are happy to once again donate 100% of the proceeds from this year’s event.
If you are considering contributing an item or service to our auction, some items that have sold well in previous years’ auctions have been gift baskets, food items, gift certificates, clothing, artwork, and jewelry. If you would like more information on donating, please call 707-824-2381 to reach Analy Student Leadership. You can also send an email to analyasb@yahoo.com.
In an effort to help parents more readily find our Analy Parent Newsletter on the website, the Site Council voted to change the name of the SIP ZIP. The new name reflects exactly what the purpose of this publication is and will be much easier to find on the website link.
The new name is: THE ANALY HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER
Each year, personal listening devices with names like iPod, iRiver, MP3, cell phones, etc. become smaller and more expensive. In fact, the iPod “Nano,” which retails at almost $300.00, is so small one could conceivably lose it in a pocket. Unfortunately, the small size of these devices make them easy to lose and equally easy to steal.
Again, we want to emphasize that students should not bring these items to school. Ideally, we would like to see these devices remain safe at home. However, should your student be allowed to bring his or her device to school, please advise him or her of the following:
